With the state front part of the pavilion deteriorating we have initiated the process of necessary repairs to the roof support framework.

There has been ongoing deterioration of the glass roof support woodwork for a number of years. Various repairs have been undertaken to extend the life of some of the wooden framework. The current condition is past any temporary repair as the wood is now completely rotted and collapsing in load bearing areas. The specific areas of most concern are the uprights either side of the steps and the horizontal beams running between the 4 posts shown in the photo below. The condition of the post on the right-hand side of the steps is now so poor that we have installed a steel prop in order to support this section of the roof until repair works can start.

The horizontal beam directly above this post is also completely rotted where it contacts the post. This is the beam supporting the glass roof.

The wooden handrail is detached, and the post completely rotted through. As a result, the post is collapsing away from the handrail wall. The scope of work for the repairs includes the following –
• Remove all glazing and glazing bars between the central 4 posts.
• Replace the 2 posts either side of the steps.
• Remove and rebuild the handrail wall either side of the steps.
• Install new wooden handrails.
• Replace the roof support beams between the central 4 posts.
• Re-install the glazing bars and glazing.

It is hoped that work will commence as soon as the replacement posts and beams are available, the intention being to complete the repairs before the start of the season to avoid having this area closed and cordoned off. Members will appreciate that this repair will be expensive at a time when the Club’s finances are under pressure. We have held in reserve sponsor’s funds from 2020 which were intended for cricket coaching purposes, and because of Covid-19 remain unused. Our Club Sponsor, Drum Property, has authorised the use of these funds for this repair.
