Gavin Jamieson took 2 for 42 and followed up with an unbeaten 42 off 40 balls to ensure Mannofield 3s don’t go an entire season without winning a game.

Ellon were asked to bat by Graeme Johnston after he successfully won the toss and he had first crack at the opening batsmen but without success. At the other end, Connor Shorten made a breakthrough in the 4th over removing Satya. Veldsman was quickly into his stride though and punishing long hops like there was no tomorrow. He was also given a helping hand when Sarmad Ahmed shelled a chance at long on, and capitalised on this as the runs continued to flow. The next wicket didn’t fall until the 17th over and it was Jamieson with it; Craig White caught for 9. Sarmad Ahmed was introduced for Connor after an 8 over spell and he made amends for his drop by dismissing Veldsman, a hand out of a catch to mid-wicket for 45. Ben Webb didn’t last long as Jamieson had him on the pads in-front and 60 for 1 became 63 for 3 and 73 for 4. Scott White and on loan Fraserburgh youngster G. O’Neil batted slowly, but sensibly, to steady the ship before Indika Yahathugoda took two wickets in two balls to reduce Ellon to 109 for 6 in the 37th over. From here, though, Scott White moved up a gear on his way to 50 and then onto 64 before being cleaned up by Graeme Johnston, returning for a 2nd spell after Sarmad Ahmed had finished with 1 for 26 off 12 overs – a real quality spell of left arm swing bowling. Ellon rallied to 171 for 8 off 46 overs which was 40 more than they would have gotten if 3 catches hadn’t ended up on the floor. Given Mannofield’s affinity for not scoring runs so far this season, you could be forgiven for thinking Ellon were strong favourites going into half time. But, as the old adage goes – the bookies don’t pay out during the tea break.

Mannofield opened in reply with Steve Elliott and Indika Yahathugoda, however, despite both scoring at over a run a ball, neither could make quick starts count and were dismissed for 15 and 8 respectively. From here, Mannofield were only able to chip away at the total with small partnerships. Graeme Oliver started well before being dismissed LBW for 14 and Jacques van Oorschot can count himself unlucky to fall victim to a raised finger when charging down the wicket; he’d scored 10 runs with just two scoring shots and looked untroubled in that time by openers Scott White and Greenfield, who both bowled 8 over spells first up. When Hamish Penmann could only hit a half tracker, that never got more than a foot off the ground, to short mid-wicket concerns were being raised that there could, quite literally, be demons in the pitch. Andy Russell then joined Kieran Findlay, who was beginning to pick up the ball by this point – something he’d failed to do all day in the field – and they took the score past 100 before Kieran Findlay was cleaned up by a ball that turned alarmingly for 28 off 76 deliveries. Andy Russell was joined by Gavin Jamieson and the game read 67 runs required off 14 overs with 4 wickets in hand. The pair added 25 before Andy Russell was bowled by Scott White for 18 off 41 balls going for a rather ambitious shot – 130 for 7 with 10 to go. Graeme Johnston, in at 9, took his time to get going and the rate climbed as only 6 runs were added in the next 4 overs - 36 needed off 6. Gavin Jamieson continued to muller the ball when on strike and the runs were ticking down. He hit 13 from the penultimate over, including a four and a six, to leave the scores tied with 6 balls left. A scrambled leg bye off the 3rd ball of the over was enough to see the chase home – Jamieson 42 not out and Johnston 13 not out.

A much needed win after 2 defeats in the opening 2 fixtures and encouraging signs with the bat on a pitch which got worse as the day wore on. No 2 wickets fell in quick succession as small partnerships ultimately built a platform for a late innings blast.

A close game where all 3 results were still possible right up until the last over; an enjoyable Saturday, if you will. Moreover, enough of a result to make Cults-Artos sit up and take notice in advance of next week’s league and cup double header.
