Aberdeenshire Cricket Club Pays Tribute to Akshu Fernando.

Aberdeenshire Cricket Club is deeply saddened to announce the passing of our former overseas professional, Akshu Fernando, who passed away earlier today, 30 December 2025, after a long and courageous battle following a tragic accident.

Akshu came to Mannofield as our overseas professional in 2018, and quickly became a respected and much-liked member of the club. His skills as a cricketer, his work ethic, and his warm personality left a strong impression on teammates, coaches and supporters alike during his time with us.

In late December 2018, just after his season in Aberdeen had finished, Akshu was involved in a devastating railway accident in Sri Lanka. While returning from a team running session, he was struck by a train at an unprotected railway crossing near Mount Lavinia Beach, sustaining severe head injuries and multiple fractures.

Akshu was immediately placed on life support and for the seven years since has remained in critical care. Throughout this time he battled bravely with the support and care of his family and medical team. His journey over these years was an extraordinary testament to his courage and resilience.

Before the accident, Akshu’s cricketing career had shown great promise. A former Sri Lanka Under-19 representative, he starred for his country in youth international cricket and enjoyed a successful domestic career in Sri Lanka, including a memorable unbeaten century just weeks before the tragedy.

The entire Aberdeenshire Cricket Club community mourns the loss of Akshu. He will be remembered not only for his cricketing talent, but for his spirit, kindness and the positive impact he had on everyone around him.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to Akshu’s family, friends, and all who were touched by him. He will always hold a special place in the history and hearts of Aberdeenshire Cricket Club.

Rest in peace, Akshu.
