Kenny Reid29 Aug - 14:30

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of David L. Hays, who died peacefully at home on Wednesday, aged 80.

David was a pillar of Scottish cricket, admired both for his skill as a dynamic opening batsman and for his inspirational leadership off the field.

A proud Cambridge Blue, David earned two cricketing blues during his university years before going on to represent Scotland 25 times. He also played for Middlesex CCC and Aberdeenshire CC, where his fearless, attacking style at the crease won him countless admirers - a style that would have thrived in today’s modern game.

Beyond his playing career, David’s lifelong commitment to cricket shone through his leadership. A dedicated member of the MCC, he served as President of Aberdeenshire Cricket Club for many years, guiding it through some of its most successful eras. He also held the Presidency of the Scottish Cricket Union and contributed tirelessly through countless committees, leaving a legacy that will be remembered fondly throughout the Scottish cricketing community.

Above all, David was a devoted family man - beloved husband to Jenny, proud father to Kathryn and Matthew (a former club captain himself), and a cherished grandfather.

The club extends its heartfelt condolences to David’s family and friends at this difficult time. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and his presence will long be felt both at the club and across Scottish Cricket.
