Women and Girls Cricket Launched at Aberdeenshire

Aberdeenshire Cricket Club are pleased to announce the launch of Northern Lights a Women and Girls cricket section at the club. Linked to the clubs Vision 2030 to be a modern sports club connected to the local community that is open, inclusive and diverse the creation of a women and girls’ section is an important step in achieving this objective.

The club are indebted to CALA Homes (North) for their sponsorship and support in helping the club take this significant step forward for women and girls’ cricket in the north east their support will allow the club to put in place a multi-year plan to grow the number of girls playing cricket in the area.

Fraser Carr, Sales and Marketing Director at CALA Homes (North), said: “We are delighted to see the creation of Aberdeen’s very first women and girls’ cricket team and are looking forward to supporting them over the next three years.

“This is a very exciting chapter for Aberdeenshire Cricket Club and we are pleased to have the opportunity to be part of it and help enable the club to offer a channel for girls and women to play the sport.”

Women and girls cricket is the fastest growing area of cricket, the profile of Women’s cricket is increasing through TV coverage of The 100, England Women’s International series and Cricket and the Scotland’s Women’s team progressing to the qualifying stage of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa in 2023.

There is now a clear performance pathway for players to progress to international level, underpinning this is a structured competition environment for girls to enter the game and develop their skills with softball and Wee Bash festivals, Regional Development Series, Premier League and Scottish Cup.

With an increasing number of girls attending Aberdeenshire’s junior coaching sessions, Northern Lights will provide an opportunity for women and girls to become involved in cricket.

Northern Lights membership will be open to women and girls from all clubs in the north east to join, be part of Aberdeenshires cricket structure with its own committee and access to the clubs’ facilities. Coaching sessions will provide the opportunity to train and play with their peer group and will leverage our existing coaching teams extensive experience of girl’s cricket.
